Edexcel 9BS0, paper by paper

Four Themes, Three Papers

Edexcel’s A-level is built on four themes. Paper 1 tests Themes 1 and 4, Paper 2 tests Themes 2 and 3, and Paper 3 draws on all four through a context released in advance. Each paper lasts two hours and is worth 100 marks, which leaves about 1.2 minutes per mark. Each paper has two sections, each built on a data-response question that finishes with a 20-mark answer.

Paper 1 · 35%

Marketing, people and global businesses

2 hours100 marksThemes 1 & 4
  • Two sections, each a data-response question on a different business
  • Each section builds from 4-mark calculations and explanations through 10 and 12-mark “Assess” questions
  • Each section ends with a 20-mark evaluation

Share of the whole A-level

AO16–8%
AO27–9%
AO39–11%
AO48–10%

Watch out: in 2024 the calculations on this paper covered market share, exchange rates and price elasticity. The mark scheme gives 4 marks only for a fully correct answer. Wrong rounding costs a mark.

Paper 2 · 35%

Business activities, decisions and strategy

2 hours100 marksThemes 2 & 3
  • Two sections, each a data-response question in parts
  • Finance and operations sit alongside strategy: ratios, sources of finance, lean production, Ansoff
  • Each section ends with a 20-mark question, often asking students to evaluate two options and recommend one

Share of the whole A-level

AO16–8%
AO27–9%
AO39–11%
AO48–10%

Watch out: the 2024 paper asked for ROCE and operating profit margin. Students then need to interpret the figure, not just calculate it.

Paper 3 · 30%

Investigating business in a competitive environment

2 hours100 marksAll themes
  • Section A covers the broad pre-released context, such as an industry or market
  • Section B focuses on at least one strand within that context
  • In 2024, each section had 8, 10 and 12-mark “Assess” questions and a 20-mark recommendation

AO25–7%

Watch out: examiners reported students using good research but ignoring the extracts. Some even wrote about the wrong business.

The Paper 3 pre-release

How Edexcel’s Pre-Released Context Works

On Paper 3, students know the industry months before the exam. Recent contexts have included clothing retail (2024), the music industry (2025) and confectionery (2026).

  1. November

Pearson releases a broad context, such as an industry or a market, for the following summer’s exam. For students sitting in June 2027, that means November 2026.

  2. November to May

Students research the industry: its market structure, main businesses, trends, and the pressures and opportunities they face. Research notes can’t be taken into the exam.

  3. June

The exam uses new, unseen extracts about businesses in that context. The best answers combine background knowledge with the evidence on the page.

As soon as the context is published, we build a research plan around it. We cover the key businesses and trends, link them to the relevant specification topics and practise with unseen extracts written in the Edexcel style. Students then use their research to support their answers, not to replace the evidence in the paper.

Edexcel question types

What Each Type of Question Is Really Asking For

Edexcel builds evaluation into nearly every question worth 8 marks or more. That’s a key difference from AQA, where 9-mark “Analyse” questions need no judgement. An “Assess” answer with no counter-argument and no judgement is capped, however good the analysis. This is how we teach each type.

Question typeMarks and whereHow the marks splitWhat a top answer does
Calculate4 marks · Papers 1 and 2Knowledge 1, application 3Picks the right data from the extract, including footnotes, shows the working and gives the answer to the required decimal places and units.
Explain4 marks · Papers 1 and 2Knowledge 1, application 2, analysis 1Defines the concept, applies it twice to the business in the extract and adds one consequence.
Assess8 marks · Paper 3 (and at times Papers 1 and 2)4 levelsOften asks for “two factors” or “two consequences”. It needs two developed points, each with a brief counter-argument, and a short judgement.
Assess10 marks · all papersKnowledge 2, application 2, analysis 3, evaluation 3Developed chains of reasoning on both sides, supported by the extract, ending with a judgement that says what the answer depends on.
Assess / Evaluate12 marks · all papersKnowledge 2, application 2, analysis 4, evaluation 4A wider, balanced argument that weighs competing factors and shows which matters most for this business.
Evaluate / recommend20 marks · two on every paperKnowledge 4, application 4, analysis 6, evaluation 6Usually compares two options or judges a strategy. It ends with a clear recommendation that adds new reasoning rather than repeating earlier points.

The four assessment objectives on Edexcel

How Each Skill Shows Up on Edexcel Papers

All the boards use the same four assessment objectives, but Edexcel weights the higher skills more heavily. Analysis and evaluation together make up over half of the A-level, so good knowledge alone won’t get a student far.

AO1

Knowledge & Understanding20–22% of the A-level

AO1 is worth 1 or 2 marks on the shorter questions and 4 on each 20-mark question. It still matters, because the 2024 examiners saw students lose marks by mixing up basics such as private and public limited companies, or demand and supply. Precise definitions are the foundation of every level.

More on AO1 Knowledge and Understanding
AO2

Application22–24% of the A-level

Application earns 3 of the 4 marks on a calculation, and it’s what stops longer answers from being generic. On Paper 3 it means using the extracts, not only pre-release research. Strong answers explain why a figure in the extract matters.

More on AO2 Application
AO3

Analysis28–30% of the A-level

Analysis is Edexcel’s most heavily weighted skill. Level 3 and Level 4 answers need developed chains of reasoning that show cause and effect. When a calculation is followed by an assessment, the analysis has to interpret the number, not just quote it.

More on AO3 Analysis
AO4

Evaluation26–28% of the A-level

Evaluation is needed on every question from 8 marks up. Examiners reward a brief, developed counter-argument to each point and a final recommendation that adds something new, such as what the decision depends on, rather than a summary.

Inside a lesson

How We Build a Top-Level “Assess” Answer

Here’s how a tutor might break down a 10-mark question in a lesson. The practice question is our own, written in the Edexcel style. Unlike a pure analysis question, it needs both sides and a judgement.

Practice question · 10 marks
A regional chain of independent coffee shops is switching to fully compostable cups and packaging. Assess the likely impact of this decision on its profit.

On Edexcel, a 10-mark answer is split into knowledge 2, application 2, analysis 3 and evaluation 3. Leaving out the counter-argument or the judgement caps the mark.

AO1

Be precise: profit is revenue minus total costs, so the question is about both sides of that equation. This sets up the structure of the whole answer.

AO2

Use the context: compostable cups cost more per unit, and a coffee shop gets through thousands of them a week. Specific to this business, not generic.

AO3

Chain one: higher variable cost per drink → lower contribution per sale → lower profit, unless prices rise. Cause and effect, each step linked.

AO4

Counter-argument: ethical positioning may attract loyal customers who are less sensitive to price → a small price rise may not cut demand → profit protected. A developed other side, not just “however”.

AO4

Judgement: the impact depends on how price-sensitive its customers are and whether nearby rivals have made the same switch. If they haven’t, the chain may gain a point of difference. Says what it depends on.

How we tutor Edexcel students

From Mock Marks to a Plan That Works

  1. Find where marks are lost

We go through recent mocks by question size and by theme. That shows whether marks are slipping on calculations, on the “Assess” questions or on the 20-mark recommendations.

  2. Build the structures

Students learn a repeatable structure for each tariff: when to give two points or one, how long a counter-argument should be, and how to write a recommendation that earns Level 4.

  3. Timed papers and the pre-release

From the spring term, students write timed answers marked against Edexcel’s levels, alongside focused preparation for the Paper 3 context.

Lessons are one-to-one on Google Meet, usually once a week, with no contract.

FAQs

Edexcel A-Level Business Questions

When is the Edexcel Paper 3 context released?

Pearson releases a new context each year in the November before the summer exams. For students sitting Paper 3 in June 2027, that’s November 2026. Recent contexts have been clothing retail, the music industry and confectionery.

Can students take their pre-release research into the exam?

No. Research and notes can’t be taken into the exam. The paper uses new, unseen extracts, so students need to know the industry well and still build their answers on the evidence in front of them.

Do the shorter “Assess” questions need a conclusion?

Yes. On Edexcel, 8, 10 and 12-mark questions all include marks for evaluation, so answers need a counter-argument and a judgement. Leaving these out is one of the most common reasons students are capped below the top level.

Is Edexcel changing its A-level Business specification like AQA?

AQA’s new specification starts in September 2026. Pearson’s Edexcel A-level Business (9BS0) remains the current course on its qualifications website, and we’ll update this page if that changes. You can compare the AQA changes on our AQA A-level Business tutor page.

Do you also tutor AQA and OCR A-level Business?

Yes. We tutor AQA, Edexcel and OCR at A-level and GCSE, as well as BTEC Business at Levels 2 and 3. Lessons always follow your child’s own specification.

How many lessons will my son or daughter need?

Most students have one 60-minute lesson a week. Early in Year 12, once a fortnight can work. After February half-term in Year 13, two or three a week is common for the final push, including Paper 3 preparation.
