Kent is one of the few counties that still runs a full grammar school system. It has 32 grammar schools, and places are decided by the Kent Test, taken at the start of Year 6. Most grammar schools have mixed sixth forms that admit students from other schools, and post-16 applications across the county go through Kent Choices.
That creates three situations we see often:
A new school at 16 often means a new exam boardA student who took Edexcel GCSE may start an AQA A-level, with different papers and command words.
Many start A-level Business from scratchBusiness is usually an option subject at GCSE, so plenty of Year 12s meet it for the first time.
Some sixth forms offer BTEC rather than A-levelWe support both routes, and teach the A-level one-to-one where it isn’t offered locally.
Whatever the board, every A-level Business paper is marked against the same four assessment objectives. Your tutor marks each answer against all four and targets the one holding the grade back.
Examiners reward students who apply theory to real businesses. Kent has some of the clearest examples in the country, and we use them in lessons.
Trade & external influences
The Port of Dover
The UK’s busiest international ferry port handled about 2.1 million freight vehicles in 2025, and it carries around a third of the UK’s trade in goods with the EU. When border checks or bad weather slow the port, queues back up across Kent’s roads and supply chains feel it far beyond the county.

Growth & risk
English wine from the Weald
Chapel Down, near Tenterden, is the largest producer of English wine. Vines take years to produce a crop, so expanding means committing large sums of money today against harvests that depend on the weather years from now.
A classic “should they invest?” judgement weighing growth against risk: AO4 Evaluation.
Seasonal demand
The visitor economy
Visit Kent estimates the county’s visitor economy generated £4.1 billion in 2023 and supported more than 77,000 jobs. From Canterbury Cathedral to the coastal towns, many businesses earn much of their year’s revenue in a few busy months.
Turns cash-flow forecasting and seasonal staffing into real decisions: AO2 Application.

FAQs
Questions Kent Parents Ask
Do you offer A-Level Business tutoring anywhere in Kent?
Yes. All our lessons are one-to-one and online, via Google Meet, so we teach students anywhere in Kent and Medway, whether or not their town has its own area page yet. Lessons run from a shared Google Doc, so nothing is lost compared with sitting side by side.
Which exam boards do Kent schools use for Business?
It varies by school. Kent schools and colleges use AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR for GCSE and A-level, and many sixth forms and colleges offer Pearson BTEC Business. We teach all of them. Our area guides list the boards each local school publishes, and if yours isn’t listed, just tell us before the first lesson.
My child is moving to a grammar school sixth form. Will the exam board change?
It might. Schools choose their own boards, so a student who took one board at GCSE can start A-level on another. We’ll check the new specification with you and focus early lessons on the differences in papers, question types and command words.
Can you help with BTEC Business?
Yes. We support BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 Business students, helping them understand the grading criteria and prepare for externally assessed units. We guide the work but never write assignments for them.
Do you teach International Baccalaureate (IB) Business?
No. We support GCSE, A-level and BTEC Business with AQA, Edexcel and OCR, but we don’t currently support IB Business Management.
How many lessons will my son or daughter need?
Most students have one 60-minute lesson a week. Early in Year 12, once a fortnight can work; after February half-term in Year 13, two or three a week is common for the final push.
