Shareholder Approach
Shareholder Approach in a Nutshell The shareholder approach is a model of corporate governance where the primary purpose of a business is to maximise profit and returns for its shareholders. Decisions on…
We teach students, not sell data. This page explains what we collect, why we need it, who sees it and how to take control of it.
Business Tutor Ltd (“Business Tutor”, “we”, “us”) is the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. We are a company registered in England and Wales (company number 14822407), and our address is 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX, United Kingdom. Our ICO registration number is ZB634927.
To contact us about this policy or your information, email hello@business-tutor.co.uk.
This policy applies to everything we offer: our website business-tutor.co.uk, our one-to-one online GCSE, A-Level and BTEC Business tuition, our AI Business Tutor app (aibusinesstutor.co.uk), our online courses such as the Exam Technique Masterclass, our printed textbooks and revision guides, and our free resources including revision notes, past paper pages and YouTube videos.
It covers parents and guardians who contact us, students we teach, and anyone who visits our sites. If you are under 18, please also read section 14.
We collect only what we need to teach, reply to you, run our services and keep our sites secure. What that means depends on how you use us:
| When you… | What we collect |
|---|---|
| Request a free 15-minute intro, enquire or book lessons | Parent or guardian name, email address and phone number; the student’s name, year group, school, subject, exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR or BTEC) and target grade; anything you write in your message. Enquiries are stored in our website’s enquiry system and in email records. |
| Have lessons | Lesson content, notes, marked work and feedback; mock, test and predicted grades you share with us; progress records and lesson times; the email address used to join Google Meet and shared Google Docs. |
| Use AI Business Tutor | Account details; the exam level and board you choose; the answers you submit for marking; your chat messages with the AI tutor; your credit balance and purchases. |
| Buy a course, book or credits | Name, email address, order details and, for printed books, a delivery address. Card payments are handled by Stripe; we do not receive or store your full card details. |
| Visit our sites | IP address, device and browser type, pages visited, referring page and approximate location, collected through cookies and similar technologies (see section 7). |
| Arrive from one of our adverts | Campaign details carried in the page address (ad group, keyword and match type). We save these with your form submission so we know which advert led to your enquiry. |
| Leave a review | Google reviews are shown on our site; they are published by Google and you control them there. We only publish testimonials and results with permission. |
We do not ask for health information. If you choose to tell us about a learning need or health condition so we can support a student, we treat it with extra care and use it only to tailor their tuition.
Under UK data protection law we must have a lawful basis for using your information. Ours are:
We send marketing emails only where you have agreed, or where you are an existing customer and the email is about similar services. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link.
We do not sell your personal information. Marking and feedback in AI Business Tutor help you learn; we do not use them to make decisions about you with legal or similarly significant effect.
Lessons take place live on Google Meet, and lesson content, notes and marked work are kept in shared Google Docs so students have a complete record of their course. Google provides these services to us, and Google’s own privacy policy applies to your use of them.
Every tutor we use holds Qualified Teacher Status and an Enhanced DBS check, and sees only the information needed to teach the student.
We do not record lessons.
If we are worried that a child may be at risk of harm, we may share relevant information with the appropriate authorities, without consent where the law allows or requires it.
When you submit a practice answer or send a chat message in AI Business Tutor, we send it to an AI service provider, Google (Gemini), together with the question and your chosen exam level and board, so it can mark your work and reply. The provider acts on our behalf and uses your content only to return a response to us and does not use it to train its models.
Please do not put personal details such as your full name, school or contact information in your answers or chat messages.
We keep your account details, credit balance, purchases and a record of your submissions so you can see your progress and your credits. New accounts start with 3 free credits; further credits are bought through our payment provider.
Our website sets essential cookies without asking, because it cannot work properly or stay secure without them. Everything else (advertising and third-party content such as embedded YouTube videos) is switched on only if you agree in our cookie banner.
You can change or withdraw your choice at any time using the cookie settings on our website. A full list of the cookies we use, what they do and how long they last is in our Cookie Policy.
We use Google Ads to promote our tuition, courses and books, and Google AdSense may show adverts on our site. If you consent in the cookie banner, Google and its partners may use cookies to show you relevant adverts and measure their results. Google decides how it uses that information, and explains this at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can manage ad personalisation at adssettings.google.com.
When you arrive from one of our adverts, the page address carries campaign details (ad group, keyword and match type). They do not identify you. We store them alongside an enquiry only so we know which advert produced it.
We use Fathom Analytics to understand how our sites are used. Fathom does not use cookies and does not collect personal data about individual visitors.
We share personal information only with organisations that help us run our services, and only what they need:
We require our providers to protect your information and use it only on our instructions, and we do not sell it.
Some of our providers, including Google, our AI provider and our payment provider, handle information outside the UK, including in the United States. When that happens we make sure it is protected by an approved safeguard: UK adequacy regulations (including the UK–US data bridge for certified US companies), or the ICO’s International Data Transfer Agreement or UK Addendum.
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the reasons above. Our standard periods are:
| Information | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Enquiries that do not become students | 12 months after our last contact |
| Student and parent records, lesson notes and marked work | The length of the tuition plus 2 years, then deleted or anonymised |
| Invoices, payments and accounting records | 6 years, as UK tax and company law require |
| AI Business Tutor accounts, answers and chats | While your account is active; deleted 12 months after you stop using it, or sooner on request |
| Website and security logs | Up to 12 months |
| Marketing sign-ups | Until you unsubscribe |
Cookie lifetimes are listed in our Cookie Policy.
We protect your information with measures that include HTTPS encryption on our website, a web application firewall and login protection, restricted access to student records, and providers chosen for their security. No system is completely secure, though. If a breach is likely to put your rights at risk, we will tell you and the Information Commissioner’s Office as the law requires.
You can ask us to:
Email hello@business-tutor.co.uk and we will reply within one month. There is normally no charge, and we may ask you to prove your identity first. A parent or guardian can exercise these rights for a child.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
Most of our students are school-aged, studying GCSE, A-Level or BTEC Business. For students under 18, a parent or guardian normally enquires, books and pays, and we deal with them about the student’s tuition.
We use a child’s information only to teach and support them. Our online services are not aimed at children under 13; if your child is under 13, a parent or guardian should create and supervise any account. Advertising cookies are set only if consent is given in our cookie banner, and we ask students under 18 to make that choice with a parent or guardian.
A parent or guardian can ask to see, correct or delete their child’s information at any time (see section 13).
Other websites. Our site links to other sites, such as exam boards, and embeds YouTube videos. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, so please read their policies.
Changes. We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date below. For significant changes we will tell you directly, for example by email.
