Which BTEC Is Your Child Taking?

“BTEC Business” covers several qualifications of different sizes. They share a way of working, with coursework graded against criteria plus externally set assessments, but the units and exams differ. The course title is on your child’s timetable or on Pearson’s registration.

How BTEC Business is assessed

Two Kinds of Assessment, Two Kinds of Support

Every BTEC mixes internal coursework, set and marked by the school or college, with external assessments set and marked by Pearson. They need different preparation, and the rules on outside help differ too.

  • At Level 3, each unit has up to three assignments, graded against published Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria
  • Learners can’t make repeated submissions of assignment evidence, so the first attempt counts
  • On the Tech Award, Components 1 and 2 are marked against marking grids and checked by Pearson

How we help: we teach the unit content and exactly what each criterion’s command verb requires. Then students practise on our own example tasks, never on their live assignment.

External assessment

  • Unit 3, Personal and Business Finance: 2-hour exam, 80 marks. About a third is personal finance and two thirds business finance
  • Unit 2, Developing a Marketing Campaign: a research pack released in advance, then a 3-hour supervised task, 70 marks
  • Units 6 and 7 on larger qualifications: supervised set tasks. Tech Award Component 3: 2-hour exam on a case study, 60 marks

Pass, Merit, Distinction

The Command Verb Decides the Grade

BTEC criteria are graded by the verb at the start of each criterion. The same topic can earn a Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on what the student does with it. These are real criteria from Unit 1, Exploring Business, alongside Pearson’s definitions of each verb.

How We Teach the Jump From Pass to Distinction

We never work on a student’s live assignment. Instead, we practise the same thinking on our own example businesses, so students can then apply it independently. Here’s how one lesson might go.

Our practice brief
Two contrasting businesses: a family-run independent bookshop and a national supermarket chain.

The tutor uses businesses that aren’t in the student’s assignment, so the reasoning skills transfer but the work stays entirely the student’s own.

Pass

Explain features with reasons: the bookshop is a sole trader with unlimited liability, and the chain is a public limited company. Clear details with reasons, for both businesses.

Merit

Analyse relationships: a flat structure lets the bookshop owner respond to customers the same day, but a tall structure helps the chain keep hundreds of stores consistent. Links structure to aims, step by step.

Dist.

Evaluate with evidence: which factors really explain each business’s success, how strong the evidence is, what else could explain it, and a supported judgement. Weighs, compares and concludes.

Our coursework promise

BTEC coursework has to be the student’s own work, and learners can’t keep resubmitting it. Helping too much can put a grade, and the whole qualification, at risk. So we draw a clear line.

  1. Map the units and dates

    We list which units are done, which assignments are coming and when the external assessments fall, since many run in both the winter and summer series.

  2. Build knowledge and technique

    For coursework units, we teach the content and the criteria verbs. For exams and set tasks, we focus on timed practice, calculations and structuring answers.

  3. Practise, then step back

    Students practise on our own tasks with detailed feedback, then complete their real assignments independently, with the confidence to aim higher.

Lessons are one-to-one on Google Meet, usually once a week, with no contract.

BTEC Business Questions

Will you help with my child’s BTEC coursework?

We teach the content and explain exactly what each Pass, Merit and Distinction criterion is asking for, using our own practice tasks. We never write, draft, edit or mark live assignments. Coursework must be the student’s own work, and outside help that crosses that line can put their grade at risk.

Which BTEC Business units do you cover?

We support the Level 3 Nationals in Business, including the mandatory units such as Exploring Business, Developing a Marketing Campaign, Personal and Business Finance, Principles of Management and Business Decision Making, as well as common optional units. At Level 2, we support the Tech Award in Enterprise.

How do you prepare students for Unit 3, Personal and Business Finance?

Unit 3 is a 2-hour, 80-mark exam. About a third of the marks are on personal finance and two thirds on business finance, so it’s heavy on calculations and interpreting financial information. We build confidence with the calculations first, then practise full timed papers.

What is the Unit 2 set task?

Unit 2, Developing a Marketing Campaign, starts with a research pack released before the assessment. Students then complete a 3-hour supervised task worth 70 marks. We help them plan how to use the research period well and practise building a campaign under time pressure.

My child is taking a BTEC alongside A-levels. Can you help with both?

Yes. Many of our students combine a BTEC with A-levels, including A-level Business itself. See our AQA, Edexcel and OCR A-level pages for how those courses are assessed.

How many lessons will my son or daughter need?

Most students have one 60-minute lesson a week. In the weeks before an external assessment, extra sessions focused on timed practice are common.
