A-Level Business Studies Assessment Objectives
Every A-Level Business exam is marked against four assessment objectives (AOs). Knowing the content is only the first of them, which is why so many hard-working students are surprised by their grades.
This guide explains what each AO is, how many marks it’s worth, and how we teach all four, so parents can see exactly where marks are won and lost.
The four assessment objectives
Each one asks a different question of your son or daughter’s answer. Choose an objective to see what examiners look for and how we teach it.
Knowledge and Understanding
“What is it?”
Knowing the terms, concepts, theories and models. The foundation every good answer is built on, but also a ceiling on its own.
Read our AO1 guideApplication
“What does it mean for this business?”
Using knowledge in the context of the business in the question, rather than simply mentioning its name.
Read our AO2 guideAnalysis
“What happens next, and why?”
Building logical chains of reasoning about causes and consequences, one link at a time.
Read our AO3 guideEvaluation
“So what should the business do, and why?”
Weighing up the arguments and reaching a supported judgement, not just repeating the essay.

The four AOs aren’t separate boxes to tick. They stack. A gap lower down weakens everything above it, which is why we teach them in order.
Knowledge
provides the links.
Application
keeps them relevant to the business.
Analysis
connects them into chains of reasoning.
Evaluation
decides: judging, identifying what it depends on, and solving the problem.
How the marks are split
Across a whole qualification, each assessment objective is worth roughly a quarter of the marks:
| Exam board (approx.) | AO1 | AO2 | AO3 | AO4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AQA (exams up to 2027) | 22–25% | 24–27% | 25–28% | 23–26% |
| AQA (new specification, first taught Sept 2026) | 24% | 24% | 27% | 24% |
| Edexcel | 20–22% | 22–24% | 28–30% | 26–28% |
| OCR | 25% | 25% | 25% | 25% |
But the overall figures hide where the top grades are decided. On the longest, highest-value questions, knowledge earns the fewest marks and evaluation the most:
AQA 25-mark essay
OCR 15-mark evaluation question
How we teach all four
We start with the gaps
We review test scores, reports and teacher feedback to pinpoint which assessment objective is costing your son or daughter the most marks, then target it first.
We colour-code every answer
In the shared Google Doc, each part of an answer is highlighted by AO, so students can see at a glance where their marks are coming from, and where they’re missing.
Exam technique in almost every lesson
Past paper questions, marked in front of the student with verbal feedback, and every improvement highlighted in a different colour so progress is visible.

FAQs
What are the A-Level Business assessment objectives?
They are the four skills every A-Level Business exam is marked against: AO1 Knowledge and Understanding, AO2 Application, AO3 Analysis and AO4 Evaluation. They are set by Ofqual and are identical across AQA, Edexcel and OCR.
Which assessment objective is worth the most?
Across a whole qualification, each is worth roughly a quarter of the marks. But on the longest, highest-value questions evaluation matters most: on an AQA 25-mark essay, 10 marks are for evaluation, more than any other skill.
Can my child get an A* just by learning the content?
No. Knowledge and understanding makes up around a quarter of the marks at most, and even less on the longest essay questions. Top grades need strong application, analysis and evaluation as well.
Why does my child know the content but still lose marks?
Usually because the marks are in how knowledge is used: applying it to the business in the case study, building complete chains of reasoning, and reaching a clear judgement. These are skills that have to be taught and practised.
